Ball Screw Selection Guide: Key Parameters and Practical Tips

Ball screws are critical components in precision machinery, requiring careful selection based on load, accuracy, speed, and mounting conditions. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Define Operating Conditions

  • Load Type: Distinguish axial (e.g., vertical movement) and radial loads. Ensure the screw can handle peak loads.

  • Speed Requirements: Calculate shaft speed based on feed rate to avoid excessive vibration.

  • Travel and Accuracy: Specify travel length and positioning accuracy. High-precision applications (e.g., semiconductor equipment) need C3-C5 grade screws.

2. Pre-select Specifications

  • Nominal Diameter: Larger diameters offer higher load capacity. Common sizes: 12-120mm; prioritize 16-63mm for availability.

  • Lead: Larger leads increase speed. Recommended: 5mm or 10mm for balance.

  • Length: Thread length = travel + nut length + allowance (1.5-2× lead). Total length should include support and connection space.

3. Validate Critical Parameters

  • Allowable Axial Load: Ensure maximum load is below the buckling limit.

  • Rigidity: High rigidity reduces deflection, improving accuracy.

  • Life Expectancy: Calculate based on operating hours and load; choose durable materials.

4. Installation and Maintenance

  • Support Methods: Hinged supports suit general use; end supports are better for heavy loads.

  • Environmental Adaptability: Use dust seals for dusty environments; consider thermal expansion in high-temperature settings.

Practical Tips

  • Prioritize Stock Models: Reduce lead time and costs.

  • Consult Manufacturers: Confirm feasibility for non-standard requirements (e.g., long travels).
